The Best Pickup We Can’t Pick up: Toyota Hilux

Usually when we lament over the unavailability of specific foreign models, we are talking about sports cars such as the older versions of the Nissan Skyline.  However, here in the United States we are unable to buy one of the toughest, most well-respected and even infamous pickup trucks of all time:  Toyota Hilux.  Many people, including Toyota itself, boast that the Hilux is virtually unbreakable, and the guys at BBC’s Top Gear went so far as to…

  • Chain down a Hilux on a beach while the tide came in
  • Leave on a Hilux on a building being demolished
  • Drive a Hilux onto the Icelandic volcano that erupted and shut down commercial flights for days in Europe

…and the Hilux just kept running.  In the US, we get the Tacoma instead — a tough customer itself, but without the legacy of the Hilux.
